Outside the wind was howling causing the iron sheets of the shack to shake and make a deep disturbing sound. I closed my eyes to try and sleep again but was interrupted by my mom shouting, " MUST GET MORE ALCOHOL!" She is an alcoholic and it's actually really hard for me. She doesn't have enough money to buy more alcohol, she hasn't had a drink in a week or two, dad was forced to lock her up in the nearest toilet, all the neighbors are complaining but we had to,we kept her away from alcohol, she threatened to kill us... Dad said just to ignore her, so usually I block my ears by covering them with my hands, but today when I did it all I could hear was my stomach growling with hunger. I stood up and grabbed the text book which I still had to give to Sebabatso who had to study from it. I stuffed it in my bag and pulled a old, baggy sweater over my head, I grabbed my socks since I have no shoes. Today I had to walk to school, i usually go on the taxi, but today all the of them were full. I walked into class and squeezed into a seat at the table where there was already eight others kids seated. That day we had to write a letter to children from the other classes telling them stuff about ourselves. I just started with the first sentence: "I am a 13 year old girl named Dinie", when we heard gunshots...Mrs. Nosibusiso shouted for everyone to fall flat on the ground. Then its hit me, the gangs were fighting again. In the distance I could hear the police sirens. An hour went by but we all lay still, not making a sound, afraid we would be hurt. We all went home immediately, but when I got home it was already dark and silent, but why wasn't mom screaming? I ran into the house, I couldn't find dad anywhere. I felt a cold chill go down my spine. I heard a dog bark, and then then I heard more gunshots.
Chilling ... I was right there with you, in that moment. Well written and thought-provoking.
